Bur Dubai Souq, Se billede!
markets
Ali Bin Abi Talib St
Under wooden arcades and wind-towers, you'll discover scores of shops selling textiles, clothes and mosque alarm clocks, along with a few Arabian 'antique' stores. In the surrounding streets you can buy a sari, have a suit made, bargain for electronics, and pick up some Bollywood tapes.

Deira Gold Souq, Se billede!
markets
Sikkat al-Khali St
Deira's celebrated Gold Souq attracts buyers from all over the world. Pass through its wooden lattice archways to discover great dazzling heaps of gold - chains, rings, earrings, bracelets and every other kind of jewellery. Most impressive are the ornate Indian and Arabian designs, intended for a bride's dowry - by the look of them they're too heavy to wear!

Deira Spice Souq
markets
Al Abra St
This small but atmospheric souq was the largest in the region at the start of the 20th century. Take in the wonderfully restored wind-tower architecture and pungent aromas from jute sacks brimming with frankincense and oud, herbs and spices. It's fun to chat to the shopkeepers and guess the things you don't recognise.

Dubai Museum, Se billede!
museum
Al-Fahidi Road
Tel: 04 353 1862 (info)
The Dubai Museum is housed inside the Al-Fahidi Fort, which was built in the late 1790s, and is believed to be the city's oldest building. The museum has collections of everything from Arabian sailing boats to the curved daggers known as khanjars. There are multimedia and interactive displays, and all the exhibits have captions in Arabic and English.

Grand Mosque, Se billeder!
religious/spiritual
Ali bin Abi Talib St
This multidomed mosque boasts the city's tallest minaret. The mosque might appear to be a beautiful example of restoration work, but it was in fact built in the 1990s. As well as being the centre of Dubai's religious and cultural life, the original mosque was also home to the town's kuttab (Quranic school) where children learnt to recite the Quran.
Maintaining the style of the original Grand Mosque, which dated from 1900 and was knocked down to make way for another mosque in 1960, its sand-coloured walls and wooden shutters blend in perfectly with the surrounding old quarter of Bur Dubai.

Jumeirah Beach Park, Se billede!
park ; beach
Jumeirah Rd
This lovely grassy park adjoins Jumeirah Beach. It has walkways, kiosks, barbecue pits, picnic tables and a children's play area. The long stretch of beach is clean, lined with shady palm trees, and regularly patrolled by lifeguards. The women's only days are an opportunity for the ladies to get a tan.
Hours: 8:00am-11:00pm

Sheikh Saeed al-Maktoum House, Se billede!
significant house
Al-Shindagha Rd
Tel: 04 393 7139 (info)
Built in 1896, this was once the home of the ruling Al-Maktoum family. It was built using traditional methods, from coral coated with lime and plaster. Inside there's an interesting exhibition of photographs showing how little time it took for Dubai to go from a little fishing and pearling town to a big money, resort-style oil city.

Ski Dubai, United Arab Emirates. Se billeder!
F+A Architects
Completed December, 2005

Ski Dubai is a winter wonderland in the desert. Located in the sun-baked desert emirate of Dubai, the cavernous 32,290-square-foot indoor ski resort counts five downhill ski runs varying in difficulty (the longest is 1,312 feet with a 196.85 foot fall), a cross-country trail, a 295.2-foot quarter-pipe for snowboarders, and, of course, a chairlift.
Located next to the Mall of the Emirates, the $275 million winter wonderland also boasts the world's largest indoor snow park. At 9,842 square feet, it offers tobogganing hills, a twin track bobsled ride, a snowball throwing gallery, and a snow cavern.
While the exterior temperature in Dubai ranges from 60 to 135 degrees Fahrenheit, the ski area remains a constant 28 degrees. The entire structure is designed as a capacious cold box. The walls have several layers of insulation and 23 blast coolers. Two feet of snow pack lies underneath a layer of fresh powder that is replenished every night by mimicking mother nature: Chemical-free water is put into a specially designed chiller, sent through pipes into snow guns, and blown out into the freezing cold environment which crystallizes into snow.

blue star 1. Desert Conservation Park Thrills (United Arab Emirates)
4WDs speed up to get to the peak of the sand dunes and then simply slide down them. At the desert camp, camel rides, henna tattoes, traditional dinner, a mesmerising belly-dancer, Arabic coffee, dates, and apple sheesha await.
blue star 2. Al Qasr Hotel Rides at Madinat Jumeirah (Dubai)
Built in the style of an Arabian palace, this hotel is part of the Madinat complex that contains private villas and pools, a souk, and a water channel system whereby guests hop on and off abras (water taxis) to get around the complex.
blue star 3. Burj Al Arab - 7 Star Hotel (Dubai)
The world's only 7 star hotel takes the shape of a sail and comes complete with its own helipad. Photos are free from a 1km radius, otherwise access to the hotel is only granted to guests or those seeking lunch, dinner, or high tea.
blue star 4. The World Islands & The Palm Jumeirah (Dubai)
Dubai's coastline boasts the incredible World Islands resort, a collection of man-made islands shaped into the continents of the world. The nearby Palm Jumeirah similarly uses strategically-placed sand to form a date palm tree shaped resort.
blue star 5. Dubai's Skyscrapers & Souks (Dubai)
Dubai's skyscrapers come in a variety of shimmery blues, greens, and pinks and seem to shoot up throughout the city every few minutes. All that glitters is on show at The Gold Souk and frankincense wafts through the Spice Souk.
blue star 6. Al Ain's Camel Farm & Palace (United Arab Emirates)
Al Ain's camel farm is surrounded by camel race tracks and semi-arid desert. The Al Ain Palace Museum, residence of Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan from 1927 until the '70s, boasts beautifully decorated majlis (meeting rooms).
blue star 7. Abu Dhabi's Median Strips (Abu Dhabi)
Sheikh Zayed (deceased in Nov. '04) would often ask "How green is my desert?", green grass being the ultimate symbol of wealth in the desert. This Emirate is proud of its lush green median strips and its mosque (the largest in the U.A.E.).
blue star 8. Masafi & Badiyah Mosque (United Arab Emirates)
Visitors looking for a carpet or pottery are spoilt for choice in Masafi, 35km from Fujairah. In the same Emirate lies Badiyah mosque with its ruined watchtowers, the oldest and smallest mosque in the U.A.E.
blue star 9. Fujairah's Fort (United Arab Emirates)
The poorest of the Emirates has a cemetary and an old fort. Do not expect to see the lush, green median strips here. Unlike the other Emirates, Fujairah provides visitors with more of an adventure.
blue star 10. Buraimi Oasis Day Trip (Oman) (Oman)
The Buraimi Oasis is an easy day trip combined with Al Ain and has a colourful souq and produce market with tiny "very sweet, very sweet" bananas, pyramids of dates, and honey sold by the litre. Best of all, you do not need a visa to get there.
